I have battled with weight for most of my adult life and even battled with Bulimia Nervosa for many years in my 20’s and 30’s, only my wife knew about that but now it’s here for you all.
During that battle you come across many a fad diet from the Cambridge Diet, Cabbage soup, Atkins, Dukan, south beach etc. I tried a few and had success but then bang, the weight went back on and more. The reason for this is they are not lifestyle changes. They are the quick fix.
In 2010 I took up running, I was 16 stone at the time, I lost a bit of weight but never significantly enough to give me that rock-star look that I always wanted. “I soon realised that you cannot outrun a bad diet” something had to change so I started eating better and the weight started coming off. I realised that the better I ate the better I trained and the better I ran. I started to follow the “Paleo diet”, a whole food diet that cut out all grain, dairy and legumes.
I did very well at first and even had a few race victories and podiums but I soon hit a plateau and started going backwards. I run out of energy and my hormones plummeted. Forever at the doctors and getting blood tests we could not find anything wrong with me. I started from there on a new journey and my own diet…….the diet of learning.
I’ve always been a closet vegetarian and when out with friends I would always eye the vegetarian menu. I started to ramp down my meat intake, then fish then dairy and eggs. In 2016 I decided to try Veganism for a month. The month of January is now known as “Veganuary” and is an annual challenge. I fully expected to fail by the end of the Month but as it went on the better I felt. My hormones were finding their feet again and I felt good. I still follow a Vegan diet today, I am not saying this is the optimum diet, but it suits me, my energy levels are much better and my running has improved
For those reading the word “Vegan” and about to click off this website, You will not hear me pushing it and telling you that you have to follow a Vegan diet, or making weird health claims, or giving you a Meal plan consisting only of vegan food. Vegans tend to be healthier and live longer because they are mainly health seeking individuals. That is they improve their health across the board by not smoking not drinking as much and exercising amongst other things.
Whilst on my Learning journey I was scouring the internet looking for the new superfood, the new adaptive herb that one new supplement that was going to make you healthier and fitter. There were claims and counterclaims that would leave you scratching your head.
Which leads me to where I am today. After running the Ultra Runners premier race UTMB (did I mention that I run stupid distances for stupid amounts of time for fun), I was talking to my team mate at Raid-light UK, Ute Baird.Ute is a qualified Doctor and she mentioned a an evidence based Nutritional course called “Mac Nutrition” or “MNU” which Ute had done herself. I decided to give it a go and set out to become a certified Nutritionist that is recognised nutritional qualification in 95% of the world.
There are so many knowledgeable people involved with this “MNU” not least the CEO Martin Macdonald. Martin has Doctors, Dietitians, Team GB and professional coaches etc. enrolled onto this course, I am learning my new calling and eventually, I’ve found my Vocation in life.
I am here to share it with you by providing by nutritional information, expert knowledge, healthier lifestyle techniques and meal plans all of which are proven by Science and are evidence and results based, along with personal coaching, mentoring and support.
